About Rent SmokeFree
 Rent SmokeFree is being created as a guide to finding apartments that are free of passive tobacco smoke in metro Denver. We will be listing smoke-free buildings on a limited basis, beginning with Capitol Hill. Rent SmokeFree will also offer tips on finding smoke-free apartments and spotting the worst "smoke pits" before you get suckered into signing a lease.
We will start with a list of smoke free apartment buildings that have twenty or more units. Later, we hope to offer a Google map making it easier to find these units.
Rent SmokeFree is the first Denver website to offer these listings. Similar websites may have covered the topic of smoke-free living in metro Denver. But it would appear that none have ever endeavored to keep a list of smoke-free apartment buildings.
Knowledge is power. In matters of finding a smoke-free apartment, knowledge is the power to breathe and much more. We believe that Rent SmokeFree has the potential to accelerate the promotion of smoke-free apartments. But more importantly, Rent SmokeFree intends to start a trend. We will not accomplish an intentional smoke-free apartment market alone. But we will set an example that will spark a trend. And we predict, that this trend will become huge, rather quickly. And it will change the status quo, so that nonsmokers will have the upper hand.
A Huge Market of "Breathers" Not Being Served
There is a vast pool of nonsmoking renters who are disgusted with a predominance of smoke-infested apartments and cannot find a place to live and breathe in good health. In fact, it's fair to say that there is a huge market here, one that is being ignorantly ignored. Rent SmokeFree hopes to empower health-conscious renters and reward the ethical and conscientious property owners who provide smoke-free housing.
Conversely, we hope eventually to see the industry of smoke-infested apartment rentals become isolated until it becomes the exception to the rule. It is perfectly fitting that property owners who rent smoke-infested units, should be left with nothing but smokers. These landlords have no concern for anyone's health. And they should not enjoy revenues from the many nonsmokers who patronize them only for lack for a better choice. But now there will be a choice. Rent SmokeFree makes that choice possible by listing actual smoke-free apartment buildings.
The Choice to Rent Smoke-Free
Most nonsmokers would prefer to rent smoke-free. But actually finding a smoke-free apartment is next to impossible, since nobody has been indexing or listing them in a convenient manner. Without a convenient way to find smoke-free rentals, there really is no choice to rent smoke-free, unless you have plenty of time to scour ads for the rare exceptions that advertise smoke-free units. But this is not a practical way to find what you want. Therefore, most nonsmokers pay good money to landlords who provide smoke-infested housing.
There are few if any legislative protections. Architectural standards for active ventillation are virtually nonexistent. The state and local health departments have been terrbily archaic and ineffective at providing solutions. To put it bluntly, nobody is protecting nonsmokers at home. And landlords have no reason to care, except money. Rent SmokeFree hopes to make it more practical for renters to "vote with your money". You have the power to boycott smoke-infested housing, rather than let it destroy the quality of your life, your health and your longevity. Your rent money also has the power to encourage landlords who are willing to provide healthy smoke-free housing. Your choice will create a new and vibrant market for healthy housing.
Choosing to rent smoke-free has not been easy. But it can make your daily life a thousand times better. As this website progresses, we will outline many benefits of smoke-free housing, beyond health alone. And we plan to offer many pages of tips and info. The website is in "beta" right now, just getting started. In the meantime, please make the best of it and provide your feedback.
Rent SmokeFree is not a commercial endeavor. Nor is it a nonprofit venture with funding. It is simply a website offering information free of charge, as a public service toward a safer and healthier world.

As we accumilate a more respectable number of smoke-free apartment listings and achieve some design for this website, we will look at promoting Rent SmokeFree more actively.

Site launched (as this one page) 2010 June 07 Monday. Nothing fancy yet. Much more to come, including pages of tips, links, facts, wisdom, and maybe some illustrations and photography. The heart of Rent SmokeFree will be the apartment listings, to be expanded gradually.
